“We are in a time when creativity is either being stifled or not recognised,” Issa Rae said in her virtual acceptance speech for Kickin It’s Global Influence Award. “…and we just can’t be replaced. You can’t be replaced. You are one of one.
Though she was unable to attend Kickin It’s second annual Toast Gala, Issa sent her remarks for everyone in the room. This year, Kickin It honoured her with its inaugural Global Influence Award, a recognition meant to celebrate a creative powerhouse making waves across cultures, regions, and continents.
From acting and producing to writing and her many entrepreneurial ventures, Issa is one of the truest definitions of a multi-hyphenate creative. And for all who follow her journey, she remains a constant reminder of what’s possible through unwavering self-belief.
“To all the creatives in the room, I hope that you continue to stay true to yourselves,” she said, “to bring your authentic vision to the world. It is absolutely needed.” In addition to Issa Rae, other creatives were recognised by Kickin It, including Iyaz, Michael Winter, Tenille Clarke, and the duo Skylar and Temi. There were also numerous creatives in attendance. Stefan, Kendake, and Killa Tooma all performed, each of whom produce work that reflects Issa’s advice: deeply rooted in culture and distinctly original in their contributions to the creative canon.
“It is truly, truly amazing to be recognised and to be considered all the way in the Virgin Islands,” she said. It was a small but powerful reminder of Kickin It’s growing impact. Issa’s acceptance of this award echoes our mission: to protect culture, foster community, and support creative development across the region and beyond.
It reminds us that creativity has no borders, and that stories grounded in culture have the power to be far reaching. With the successful culmination of our second annual Toast Gala, we look forward to continuing to grow our network of creatives.
