Virgin Islanders Abroad: A Guide to Surviving the Four Seasons

Life in the Virgin Islands isn’t perfect, but let’s be real here, the weather totally is (barring the occasional huge storm, but anyway…). That being said, transitioning from consistent 70-80 degree weather to a location that cycles through ALL FOUR SEASONS can be a challenge. So read on for a quick guide in getting through it!

Fall

I’m a firm believer that summer is truly the superior season, but fall takes a close second. Temperatures tend to be moderate to cool, and the color-changing trees make you want to break out a cardigan and channel your inner HGTV housewife. My advice? Enjoy it while you can! WINTER IS COMING. (Literally.) Still, fall is a great time for fashion, and you can get away with just about anything. So put on something cute, and load up on woodsy aesthetic photos for your social media timelines.

Winter

Honestly, after being used to the consistently balmy weather of the Virgin Islands, winter doesn’t even make our list of enjoyable seasons. But if you have to get through it, be prepared! Get the bulky coat and the insulated, weatherproof boots. It’s a little pricey, but It’ll keep you from having to obsess about keeping warm when heading into the snow. Also, that winter air is dryer than old johnny cake, so make sure to keep your hair and skin moisturized. The literal darkness of the season can be a strain on your mental health, so spend some extra time indulging in self-care, take your vitamins, and remember, spring is on the horizon.

Spring

Of all the seasons, spring probably has some of the very best PR staff. So when you think of spring, you probably think of flowers, sunshine, pastel colors, and of course, spring break! What you may not realize is spring also means rain and that ever-humbling enemy of the allergic, pollen. You can probably put your winter jacket away for now, and seeing the greenery grow back in is an excellent reminder that life is itself, a cycle of good and bad. This is a good time to break out your umbrellas and Claritin, and start online shopping for bikinis – the best is yet to come!

Summer

After hunkering through the other seasons, you deserve this! Get out the short shorts, shave your legs, and let loose! The sun is up for most of the day, which is likely to boost your mood and productivity. Just remember, more sun equals more sun exposure, so treat yourself to some cute hats, and don’t forget the sunscreen. Once you’ve lathered up, head out, conquer the day, and enjoy the feel of your Caribbean-esque superpowers returning to their full strength!
Adjusting to weather outside of the Caribbean can be a trip, but remember, if all else fails, you can always move back home. Kidding! If all else fails, just keep in mind that if most of the world is surviving the four seasons, so can you. And you always appreciate the sunshine a little more after you’ve had to deal with the rain!
