For many, R.City (now Dr. Theron and Dr. Timothy Thomas) was the first time you could hear our VI accent on a global show like BET, whether on one of their charting songs or especially in their well known producer tag, ‘Right About Now,’ which dots numerous grammy awarded songs.
But, R.City’s impact goes way beyond music. When you saw R.City, you knew they were coming to represent the Virgin Islands unapologetically. They’d wave a VI flag which was often tucked into their back pockets or throw up the three fingers for the VI hand-sign.
Their contagious vibe extends to their VI audience where they serve as an inspiration to embrace our cultural identity and step fully into our uniqueness as a people. With a voice filled with pure conviction, Theron says that,
”Being a Virgin Islander, the accent, the way we talk, our slang, even our style is unique within itself so now is the time in creativity, arts of all forms…to be your true authentic self.

As the duo notes, the world’s appetite is opening up to art that pushes the boundaries of the norm. Social media, for one, allows a never ending stream into the minds and perspectives of others. “The world is open immediately for you and I don’t think you have to sugar coat or cover up your true self for anybody at this point in time,” Theron says.
Timo, who was once known by the stage name ‘Don’t Talk Much’ had equally as much to say about being unapologetically VI. “A lot of us are really desperate for something refreshing, new, different,” he said, “I feel like Island rapping is the newest thing coming… and it’s a lot of us. A LOT,” Timo exclaims.
With the rise of artists like 5’2, Banco Bizmol, PNDRN and others, we can all say that there is a space in the music industry for VI rappers and artists. Truly, though, this advice extends far beyond music and the arts but, into business, technology and the host of other industries who are in need of a perspective only a Virgin Islander can offer.
In R. City’s latest project, “This Is Not A Drill,” they shout-out both territories in numerous tracks. As Theron puts it, “we is one people…if you get that VI on ya name, you is one ah we.”
Jointly, the USVI and BVI boast a population of about 132,000 people, making up roughly 0.00165% of the global population. Our tiny islands hold a buffet of artistic talent, business savvy, technological genius and more. We have produced incredible stories, traditions and pioneers that extend far beyond the white sand beauty of our shores.The world is salivating with the chance to taste all that only we, as Virgin Islanders, can offer.
In our uniqueness, we possess an immeasurable gift that we must share with the world. So go out into the world, adorned in your gucci chains, and proudly throw those 3 fingers up high wherever you are.
Theron and Timothy has certainly led the charge, and we’re inspired to follow.
